Optics and Photonics in Poland

Optics (often referred to interchangeably as photonics) is a field focused on studying electromagnetic radiation (particularly light), the interaction of light with matter, and its unique physical properties described by both classical and quantum theories. This term also encompasses applications involving the generation, detection, and manipulation of light. Modern implementations of such research are interdisciplinary, combining physics, computer science, chemistry, mathematics, electronics, precision mechanics, information theory, communication, and related sciences.

By advancing our understanding of light propagation and its interactions with matter, optics plays a crucial role in developing modern technologies, including telecommunications, medicine, nanotechnology, imaging, and quantum technologies. For this reason, optics is considered one of the key enabling technologies (KET).

International Day of Light and Photonics Day The International Day of Light

International Day of Light and Photonics Day The International Day of Light, celebrated on May 16, was established by UNESCO to emphasize the importance of light in science, technology, culture, and education. This day aims to inspire young people to engage in science and technology and to raise public awareness of the essential role light plays in daily life. The first International Day of Light celebration was organized by UNESCO on May 16, 2018, commemorating the date in 1960 when physicist Theodore Maiman successfully demonstrated the operation of the first laser.

Photonics Day, celebrated on October 21, focuses on promoting knowledge about photonics and its applications across various fields. This day is particularly significant because, in 1983, during a conference of the International Committee for Weights and Measures, the official value for the speed of light was established at 299,792,458 m/s. This fundamental constant became one of the key physical constants forming the foundation of the International System of Units (SI).
