Piotr Węgrzyn

President & Co-founder

Bio

Piotr Węgrzyn is an inexhaustible source of ideas, which he transforms into reality with unwavering determination. He is an active community leader involved in organizing leading scientific conferences in optics and photonics in Poland, serving on both organizational and scientific committees. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the title of Ambassador of Polish Congresses and SPIE Optics and Photonics Educational Scholarship.

He works as a research fellow at the International Centre for Translational Eye Research (ICTER), where he develops techniques for functional and structural in vivo imaging of the retina by integrating both physical and engineering approaches. His research focuses on implementing modern optical coherence tomography (OCT) methods using ultra-fast cameras and light modulators. He completed his master’s degree in Barcelona at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, where he wrote his thesis on medical optics in Turgut Durduran’s group at ICFO. In 2017, he earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Warsaw.
Piotr actively participates in international scientific conferences, presenting research conducted in Poland and delivering invited lectures. He has contributed to projects funded by FNP, NCN, and the Horizon 2020 & Horizon Europe programs. In recognition of his scientific achievements, he received scholarships from the Rector of the University of Warsaw, the Minister of Science and Higher Education, and the La Pedrera Foundation as part of the “ICFO Summer Fellowship” program.

He has deepened his expertise in optics and photonics by attending major international conferences and summer schools, where he delivered numerous presentations and invited talks. His scientific contributions were recognized by SPIE, which awarded him the SPIE Optics & Photonics Educational Scholarship.
Piotr is an expert for the National Centre for Research and Development and the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development, and he is a member of leading professional organizations such as Optica, SPIE, the Photonics Society of Poland, and the Polish Physical Society.

During his studies, he was actively involved in the Optics and Photonics Student Association at the University of Warsaw (KNOF), serving as the association’s president in 2017 and 2019. He also led initiatives that resulted in KNOF becoming affiliated with the IEEE Photonics Society and the European Physical Society – making it the only organization in Poland affiliated with the largest international associations in optics and photonics. Additionally, Piotr completed the Management Essentials course at Harvard Business School, further enhancing his skills in management and organization.

In his free time, Piotr plans far-reaching journeys, sails, experiments with the perfect cheesecake recipe, and seeks out unconventional spots on the world’s gastronomic map. He also serves as an ideal counterbalance to Mihai Suster, who still doesn’t realize that a properly baked chocolate cake can never be a flop.
